In this project you will work in teams to design and build a wooden truss bridge using WhiteBox Learning software and real materials. Teams design their bridge digitally, cut 1/8" lumber with the bandsaw, and assemble it following their printed blueprints. The final exam tests how much weight each bridge can hold before breaking.
Grading Rubric:
30pts Sides - Sides of bridge are complete.
30pts Top & Bottom -Top and bottom are complete.
10pts Breaking - Team broke the bridge in class.
30pts Ranking - Award points based on capacity held during test. Students are award ZERO points if bridge is out of spec.

-5pts Gussets - Excessive glue is used to reinforce joints
A. Form your teams and go see your instructor to be added to the roster and assigned a team name.
B. Include students who are absent.
Team of 1 = Make 1 Bridge
Team of 2 = Make 1 Bridge
Team of 3 = Make 2 Bridges
Select the folder button.
A. Click the "new" button to start a new file.
B. Click "save" at the end of every class.
C. Click "open" to retrieve a file.
Name your file with the last names of your team maktes and your bin number / team number.
Design your bridge to hold the most weight in the simulation while staying in specification!
You must submit two items to the assignment:
A. Screenshot of Specification (.png)
B. Blueprints On Legal Size Paper (.pdf)
(I will not print blueprints that are out of spec or missing a file name)
Set up your board as shown:
Cardboard
Parchment
Masking Tape
A. One or more teammates that are bandsaw certified can start cutting wood for your group.
B. The bandsaws will be setup to cut 1/8in lumber for your project.
Make sure to cut the wood WITH THE GRAIN!
Use the blueprint to line up your lumber.
Use the RULER and PENCIL to mark your cuts.
Your marks should look like this!
Miter Shears or Snap Off Knife and Matt
Handtools and sharps class certification required.
How to Sign Out A Tool:
A. Write your FULL name on provided slip of paper.
B. Trade Mr. Aktas your paper for a tool.
C. Trade back at the end of the period (tear up your paper slip).
*Only the person who signed out the tool has permission to use THAT tool.
**Class CANNOT be released if any sharps have not been returned.
A. Dip the ends in glue!
B. Fasten your lumber to the board as shown below...
A. Your first pin should be at an angle.
B. Push the second pin straight down.
C. The pins will hold your work in place while the glue dries.
Assemble to top and bottom with or without the blueprint.
Tape is provided so keep organized. Loose lumber gets swiped!
Wrap up your loose wood.
Tape it down so NO ONE TAKES IT!
